Still Learning 11/24/2009

As tech savvy as I am, I still learn new things constantly. One of my many goals for Thanksgiving break was to get connected with GoogleAdSense. I know I'm not selling anything per se, but attracting people to my Web site could help me get a job.

I have to admit that the $100 gift card I received was a big reason I was willing to try the service. It seemed like an unusual way to attract attention. Here's hoping it works.

If you came in through an ad, please let me know.

Although I can't help you with a job I wanted to let you know I noticed your site right away because how unusual and ingenius it is. Good luck to you!

Hey, I came into your site through the Google ad, which showed up on a Huffington Post journalism story, so the investment in Adsense is paying off!

This points to one big difference between legacy journalism and online is the amount of marketing you need to build your audience. It's not easy getting a thousand people to your site every day, as I'm sure you're realizing.

At UMass Amherst, we are teaching lots of multi-platform journalism courses, along with a new course called Entrepreneurial Journalism, in which students develop their own web-based projects. Hopefully, we can find some new models and some answers to the depressing situation you are exploring in your blog. We need to keep young people engaged in journalism somehow!

Great blog. Keep at it.
