Cops: Imitation pot as bad as the real thing The Associated Press
This story ran on the AP national wire and made its way to Taiwan. It prompted conversation across the country.
Idaho dairy farmers cut back as dairy prices drop The Associated Press
This story ran on the AP national wire. I had to ensure that it would be interesting on both a state and national level. The article ran in some of the country's top newspapers.
Warm welcome for party stalwart Los Angeles Times
I was the only Washington, D.C. intern asked to return to help The Los Angeles Times cover the 2009 Democratic Convention. There was a lot of questions about if Sen. Kennedy would be cleared by his doctors to speak at the convention. I spent the entire day convincing his family, friends and long-time staff to speak with me about that it would likely be his last convention speech.
'Sleeper cell' Republicans band together in Missouri Senate The Columbia Missourian
I wrote this story after I returned from my time with the AP in time to cover the last weeks of Missouri's 2009 legislative session. As I reconncted with sources I kept hearing the phrase "Republican Sleeper Cell" in reference to a few state Senators.
Breaking News
Idaho to other states: take my wolf, please The Associated Press
The most consistent story I covered while working for The Associated Press was about taking wolves off of the endangered species list. This article is one of dozens I wrote about how the state was dealing with wolf overpopulation.
Cable park arouses wakeboarders' passions The Oklahoman
One of my favorite parts of being a reporter is identifying moments in a person's life and sharing them with my readers. This article took me to a man-made lake where a family was teaching children to wakeboard in Oklahoma. The contrasting idea of wakeboarding and rural life made this story stick in my memory.
Abuse at meat plant is probed Los Angeles Times
The day this story broke I sat at the U.S. Humane Society building with reporters from top media outlets watching video taken at a California slaughterhouse. Not only was the meat packing plant within my readership base, but the meat was going into school lunches. I knew I had to move faster and be more indepth than any other media outlet. I was the only person that day to get a quote from an official at the slaughterhouse.
Missouri Press Association News Summaries
I wrote a weekly state news summary to all Missouri Press Association members. I edited articles, rewrote radio copy for a print audience and took photos.
